Description
The Mayfield Skull Clamp is a vital piece of equipment used by neurosurgeons (brain and spine surgeons).
What It Does
- Holds the Head Still: Its main job is to rigidly fixate (hold perfectly still) a patient’s head to the operating table.
- Three Pins: It uses three special pins that gently anchor into the outer layer of the skull.
- Two pins are on one side (a rocker arm).
- One pin is on the opposite side, which features a screw to apply a specific, safe amount of force.
- Prevents Movement: By locking the head, the clamp ensures there is zero movement during delicate procedures like tumor removal or aneurysm clipping, where millimetre accuracy is required.
