Description
The Bookwalter Retractor Set is the gold standard in self-retaining, table-fixed surgical retraction systems, widely used in open abdominal, general, urological, and gynecological surgeries.
It is designed to provide surgeons with unparalleled exposure and a stable, hands-free operative field throughout complex and lengthy procedures.
How the System Works
The Bookwalter is not a single tool, but a customizable system built around a few core components:
- Table Post and Flex Bar: The system is first anchored rigidly to the operating table rail using a clamp and post. A flexible or horizontal bar extends over the patient.
- Retraction Ring: This is a semi-circular or oval metal frame that attaches to the flex bar and sits around the incision site on the patient’s abdomen.
- Retractor Blades: Various specialized retractor blades (such as Kelly, Malleable, or Harrington) are attached to the ring using adjustable ratchet mechanisms. These blades are used to gently hold back the abdominal wall, tissues, and underlying organs.
- Ratchet Mechanisms: These devices allow the surgeon to precisely adjust the depth and angle of the retraction and then lock the blade firmly in place, keeping the tissue consistently out of the way.
